Autism, also referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder; a disease
affecting children and trapping them in their bodies. April 2nd of every
year is World Autism Awareness Day, a day to shine light on the
condition and how to cope with it. Whether you know someone that is
Autistic or simply heard about the condition before, please take time to
know more about it here in this article and share it to raise awareness
so we can be able to fight it.
What is Autism?
Simply put, it is a complex developmental disability. It is a result of a neurological disorder that affects the brains ability to function normally therefore decelerating a person’s ability to socially interact with people and communicate non-verbally.
What are the symptoms for Autism?
The range of systems is wide varying according to severity of the condition. From being socially clumsy and out of place, all the way to avoiding eye contact and all human interaction, autism is a condition that can be improved. Autistic people tend to be less social, less interactive, less empathetic, some experience tics and jerky movements, very enthusiastic towards one subject only, some but not all tend to dislike physical contact (although this can be taught), they like quietness and ambient environments, according to the severity of the autism some children with ASD do not talk at all or like to repeat words or phrases they hear, and they often have obsessions. Just like a normal child would behave, autistics just take these behaviors to the extreme. A person suffering from autism likes repetition and predictability, they dislike surprises and sudden changes to which they won’t be able to adapt to. They are unique people with a unique character that can be hard to predict.
Autistics do not show empathy but they do have feelings. They experience happiness, sorrow, love, and pain just like anyone else. Although they may not be able to express clearly how they feel, this does not mean they don’t feel.
The earlier you detect the disease, the higher the chance of improvement. Special day cares, schools, and teachers can help parents cope with an ASD patient.
Causes of ASD:
The causes behind the disorder are unknown. Some scientists say it’s genetic, some say it’s neurological, but no one really knows what’s causing it.
Treatment of ASD:
There is no treatment to the disease but rather several ways to help cope with it and fight it. Special education schools teach children with ASD how to communicate better and helping them get their point across.
Now that you know about the disease, help us inform other people about it, maybe one day you will be the reason behind discovering a cure for Autism.
