Tips on coping with child Eczema

Some adults might have a hard time trying to resist scratching an itch, so imagine how a 5 year old with eczema would feel. Here are a few tips that would help you assist your child with their skin condition.
1.Moisturize: keeping the skin hydrated and moisturized will prevent break-outs. Ointments and creams have been known to stay on the skin longer than lotions so dab on moisturizers after your child’s bath to allow maximum hydration. Use fragrance free products to avoid skin irritation.
2.Go natural: go back to nature by using herbal remedies containing
chamomile, witch hazel, and licorice. However consult a professional first before using any herbal product on the skin.
3.Hemp oil: studies found that ingesting hemp oil may help reduce eczema. A teaspoon three times a day, whether on food or drinks was shown to be very effective even when used topically. Do not heat as this reduces its effectiveness.
4.Alternatives: exploring different food options can always help with child eczema. Some foods are known to be related to the skin condition like milk and eggs, so instead of cow milk, try soy or goat.
5.Visit a doctor: keep visiting your doctor even if the eczema seems to be better. An exclusion diet/ test carried by your doctor will help you identify what foods that provoke the eczema.
6.Cold Baths: Fill up your tub with cold water and let your child play in it when the itch starts to get really bad.
7.Stay Away: perfumed/ SLS products (shampoo, detergent, fabric softeners …) can be a major problem when it comes to eczema as they take away the skin’s natural oils leaving the skin dry.
8.Prescription Creams: dispensed by a health-care professional will help reduce the itch. However read the ingredients anyway and avoid steroid preparations as they are known to thin the skin which worsens the condition on the long run.
9.Oatmeal: being very nutritious to eat, oatmeal is also extremely beneficial for calming irritation when used externally. An oatmeal bath will work wonders for your child’s skin.
10.Air it out: try exposing the skin as much as you can when indoors. Fabrics brushing against the skin will irritate your child faster. When outdoors, put on sun-block to avoid sunburns.
