If you want more sex you need to step away from the cooker and leave the hoovering to your other half.
According to new research, men who do traditionally ‘female’ chores like cooking and cleaning have less regular sex.
The study, by sociologists at the University of Washington, found that
husbands in marriages where the wife did all the traditionally female tasks reported having sex about 1.6 times more per month than those where the husband did all the “feminine” jobs.
It all sounds a bit confusing, given that other studies have shown that men who share the housework have more satisfying relationships. So what really can guarantee men more sex? Here are a few bankers.
Do more chores
I know, we just said that men who do less washing-up and dusting get more sex. But the same study found that men who did more of what are traditionally considered 'manly' chores got the most sex of all.
After analysing 4,500 American couples the researchers found that those who had the most sex tended to divide chores along traditional lines. So while the women did more cooking and cleaning, the men did more DIY and car maintenance.
Why that should translate into extra action in the bedroom isn’t really known. Julie Brines, one of the report’s authors, said: “The results show that gender still organises quite a bit of everyday life in marriage.
“In particular, it seems that the gender identities husbands and wives express through the chores they do also help structure sexual behaviour.”
Be richer
The bad news is that wealth does get men (but not women) more sex, or at least more opportunities for sex. A study that was reported on in the British Journal of Psychology discovered that when the same man was photographed in a Bentley and a Ford Fiesta, women were significantly more sexually attracted to the version in the Bentley.
But there’s good news there too. The women were attracted to the trappings of wealth - a fancy car in this case - but that could also mean a designer top or a good watch. Or to put it more cynically, you don’t have to be rich to give the impression of wealth.
Get a dog
Psychologist Nicolas Guégen conducted a number of studies in which he asked male participants to try and obtain the phone number of random female strangers. Men were three times more likely to get a number if they were accompanied by a dog.
That’s quite an astounding finding. Maybe a dog signifies a sense of responsibility or a caring nature. Oy maybe women just like dogs. Whatever it is, it seems that dogs work wonders for our sex appeal.
Grow
Apologies to short men but it appears one way to get more sex is to be tall. According to Cindy Meston and David Buss, authors of Why Women Have Sex, “studies consistently show that women consider tall men to be attractive...A study of British men found that taller than average men have had a greater number of live-in girlfriends than their shorter peers.”
Short men shouldn’t despair though. It could be that in traditional cultures height is an indicator of status, with tall men more likely to come from better off families who could afford to feed them well and keep them healthy as they grew. In modern society status can be shown by a whole array of factors beyond height.
Get fit
Meston and Buss also cite studies that show women are particularly attracted to fit men. That’s no surprise, of course, but it’s worth noting just what most women define as fit.
Because, though women like quite muscular men, they don’t usually like muscle-bound men. The bodybuilder body type is not especially attractive to most women. What is considered sexy is a V-shape torso with a high shoulder-to-hips ratio. Broad shoulders and slim hips are key, and studies show that broad-shouldered men have more sexual partners and more affairs than their slimmer shouldered peers.
Men who aren't naturally broad-shouldered can emphasise their own V-shaped torso by building upper body strength and staying slim.
Speak well
Speak intelligently and seductively, but also speak deeply. That’s the message from studies which show that, when women are evaluating potential opportunities for sex, a deep, manly voice helps to tip them in the right direction.
One study played sound recordings of men trying to persuade a woman to go on a date to 142 heterosexual women. The women routinely preferred the deepest voices, and by an especially large margin when considering which they would choose for a purely short-term sexual liaison. Another study of American men found that those with lower-pitched voices had more sex partners on average than their higher-toned peers.
Not all men have naturally deep voices, of course, but all men can speak confidently and clearly, which are other traits that distinguish a sexy masculine voice.
None of these methods of increasing your sexual success are foolproof, of course, and you’ll get nowhere - whether you’re single or in a relationship - without charm, wit and a good sense of timing. But these factors have all been shown to push subconscious sexual buttons, making sex far from certain, but perhaps a little more likely.
