Oscar De la Renta Calls for Cutting Down Guest Lists in NYFW

Oscar De la Renta, one of the world’s most renowned fashion designers cuts down his fashion week guest list in half (down to 350 guests) to his New York Fashion Week show.

The Guardian reported on Saturday that only guests with a “legitimate professional purpose” will be allowed to attend the show and see the ODLR designs upclose.

The designer told the Guardian that decision makers in the fashion industry shouldn’t have to fight their way through thousands of celebrities, paparazzis, and fashion editors in this celebrity circus to get a close understanding of the showcased pieces.

With the rise of social media outlets like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, and blogs, fashion week has become a global event that people wait anxiously for every year. Being such a huge event, photographers and bloggers can’t wait to capture the moments freshly as they happen and post them live on their outlets, therefore making it hard to focus on fashion being displayed and the trends being set.

Tom Ford has already limited his audience and isn’t allowing any photography in his shows to give his audience a fuller experience of fashion week… Smart?? Maybe, but at the same time this can hurt the designer’s reach to the general public through social media outlets.

Oscar De la Renta’s call for cutting down guest lists and celebrity infused shows maybe the best thing to happen to the fashion industry in years he says "If a show is highly chaotic and a real circus, the people that do matter aren't going to be put into the best of moods," he pointed out. "Do you want to jeopardise the experience of the 100 people that matter with the 500 people that don't?"
Do you agree with De la Renta or do you think that will harm his outreach?
